Welcome Aboard
The USS Holland AS-32 Association Welcomes you to our website honoring
the third ship of the United State Navy to bear the name of the Father of the
Modern Submarine:
John Philip Holland

John Philip Holland (Irish: Seán Pilib Ó Maolchalann) (29 February, 1840 – 2 August, 1914) was an engineer who developed the first submarine to be formally commissioned by the U.S. Navy (though not the first American submarine, see American Civil War submarines, and the earlier Nautilus and Turtle) and the first ever Royal Navy submarine, the Holland 1.

The United State Submarine Service was born on April 11, 1900 when the Navy Department purchased John Holland's sixth submarine. The Holland VI was commissioned as USS Holland on October 12, 1900 and later given the designation SS-1

USS Holland (AS-3) was a submarine tender that served in World War II. The Holland was launched by the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard, Bremerton, Washington, on April 12, 1926. The USS Holland AS-3 was decommissioned on 21st of March, 1947. She was assigned to the San Diego, California group of the Pacific Reserve Fleet until her name was struck from the Navy Register on 18th of June 1952. Her hull was sold for scrapping on 3 October 1953 to the Bethlehem Steel Co.

USS Holland (AS-32) was conceived and built in the middle of the Cold War, serving the nation from her commissioning on September 7, 1963, in Charleston, South Carolina through her decommissioning on April 13, 1996, in Apra Harbor, Guam, a few years after the Cold War officially ended. During her thirty-three years of active duty, the USS Holland AS-32 serviced Fleet Ballistic Missile Submarines (SSBN) and Fast Attack Submarine (SSN) in both Atlantic and Pacific and ended her career as the only US navy Tender, submarine or surface, in WestPac (Western Pacific). She is currently laid up in the National Defense Reserve Fleet at Suisun bay, Benicia, California waiting for final disposition .

We would be totally remiss if we did not recognize the contributions the United Sates Marine Corps Detachment made to Holland's security and success and encourage all Marines who served aboard the USS Holland to consider this site as your own--
